ROTTWEILERS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Although we realize we can not save every homeless Rottweiler.....every now and then one comes along that has suffered so much neglect or abuse and has survived....because the dog had the 'will to live'. These dogs that survive, despite the treatment from their previous owners, are the ones that really touch the hearts of the many volunteers devoted to rescue. We cannot turn our backs on them ... we do not discriminate against the old, the sick, the injured .. we do whatever we can, sparing no expense for each dog that enters our program.

At times we have been in situations where a dog needs more medical care than our funds allow, or the medical expenses of a dog completely deplete our funds; thus making it impossible to take in new dogs. It is at times like this we have relied on the kindness and generosity of our supporters.

Thank you for helping us help them!

LENA

Lena is 10 weeks old and needs our help. This darling little girl has been diagnosed with a grade 3 heart murmur and is being refered to Guelph University for further evaluation and an echocardiogram. She has a wonderful and sweet personality, a life of life that shines through in all she does. Lena doesn't know she has a heart condition and we don't intend to tell her or let it limit her in any way.

Please help us give Lena the gift of life, something so young and precious deserves a chance at love and a family to call her own.

Update****04/16/2007 ********

Lena has an appointment booked with Guelph ... please send well wishes along with your support that this little angel will be ok.

MADY

We have a situation that requires your help. Some of you might remember a young dog named Molson that came into rescue a few months ago from a shelter in Elliot Lake. She was only approximately 1 year old and had spent that first year of her life neglected, abused and unloved. As a result  - she has growth related deformities in her back legs and is in terrible pain.

Mady now has a new life (to go along with her new name) with a wonderful family that love and adore her  ... they have shown her what it is like to be part of a family and couldn't be more devoted to her.

Sadly Mady's condition is worsening .. to the point she can no longer walk on her own and is confined to a wheel chair. Her only hope is a life saving corrective operation that will reshape the baldy damaged bones in her back legs. However it is an expensive operation .. ($2500 per leg) and neither Mady's new family or the rescue can afford such a procedure so we are appealing to you  .. to PLEASE help Mady walk again.

*************Update 10/30/2003 *******************

The Walk for Mady was a huge success … we have been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of those that have donated. Mady has already had the first leg operated on by Dr Gofton of the Mississauga referral clinic and we are THRILLED to tell you she is doing very well … even Dr Gofton is impressed with her progress.  Of course only time will truly tell but if what we see so far is any indication of what the future holds for Miss Mady … then it will be worth every penny.

Special Note from Mady’s Mom

Words can not express how much everyone's generosity with time and money means to us.  Being Mady's mom, of course I am quite predjudice as to how special and brave she is, and also quite proud at how far she has come.  Mady gives you all, her gentle kisses, and her lion-like growl of happiness, and thanks.  This means so much more, than words could ever express, but for those of you who have these wonderful tan and browns, or any other loving pet, maybe you can understand just a little more.  Mady thanks you. I thank you, for the bottom of our hearts!  I hope by the time the next reunion comes around, Mady will be able to strut her stuff, and show you why she touched your hearts!  Thank you all again.

Best Regards,

Sandy Beattie

ROSABELLE

Rosabelle was frightened and uncomfortable. The place she was in was loud and had a ominous feel to it. Her heart hurt with sadness and sickness. What had she done to be abandoned like this? Where had her people gone? She had been watching people come and go for a few days now .. every so often someone would stop in front of her cage, they would usually look at her with pity and sadness in their eyes - then would walk away. Once again she was forgotten .. there were so many of them there in need. Rosabelle tried very hard to make the sad people happy as her nature is one of kindness and love .. she kissed the hands of strangers only hoping to show them her devotion to species that had so blatantly failed her.

There came the day when Rosabelle's time was "up" .. she was literally hours away from dying when we received an urgent plea about a wonderful dog that needed our help. So Rosabelle escaped death .. that day. Once she was safe and sound in foster care we discovered what a true jewl this girl is .. she LOVES children and in turn they are drawn to her. She mothers the little dogs and even kisses the kitty. We also discovered she was heartworm positive. So once again .. Rosabelle has a death sentence.

Heartworm treatment is very expensive ... the rescue just finished treating Mac .. we need your help to give Rosabelle the same chance at life. Please be generous .. once again Rosabelle is depending on strangers to save her life .. please don't walk away.

Update****10/01/2003 ********

Rosabelle has found the home she had been waiting for all her life. Her foster mum found her to precious to part with and adopted her.

FRANKIE

Look at this precious face .. only 10 weeks old and in the care of rescue. Frankie was born April 10th, 2003, a happy healthy puppy, as time went by he did all the regular things puppies do, learned to walk, wrestled with his brothers and sisters, and explored his new world in general. However .. little Frankie did all this in the dark -- as he was born blind.

When his "breeder" suspected Frankie couldn't see he took him to the local vet where it was determined that the pup had no sight. That was the last anyone saw of the man responsible for bringing Frankie into this world. When the clinic contacted him to come pick up Frankie they were told to euthanize him as there was no way he could sell a blind pup. The staff and the Vet at the clinic had by this time completely fallen in love with Frankie and couldn't imagine putting a healthy happy puppy to sleep simply because he was blind.

The clinic kept Frankie for 3 weeks .. trying to find a home for him -- but no one wanted a little blind puppy .. Frankie's chances were not looking good and the clinic staff were faced with the realization that they might have to euthanize this pup they had worked so hard to save. Fortunately one of the staff members called Adopt-a-Rott and 3 days later little Frankie was in the arms of his new foster mom.

Frankie is going to need to see a specialist .. he has been tentatively diagnosed with Retinal Dysplasia .. which is a genetic condition. We want to exhaust all possible medical options - we owe this sweet pup that. However, the costs involved are high .. and after a run of medically challenged dogs the financial situation of the rescue is simply and sadly - dismal.

We are therefore appealing to you to help us help Frankie -- he is only 10 weeks old .. a baby that needs our help -- we simply couldn't turn our back on him -- can you?

For any support you can give, we are indebted -- and so is Frankie.

Update****10/30/2005 ********

What an amazing boy!!!! This little fellow doesn't have a clue he has what we call a "disability" and is a VERY happy, well adjusted pup that leaves paw prints all over your heart. Frankie came "home" and will be forever loved with his Mama Lorrie and Auntie Dagmar

RUFUS

What a lovely big boy, with heart to match. Rufus sadly has spent his life in silence. Born deaf and then abandoned by his owners at 3 years old. This wonderful dog found his way to our program.

Rufus has a wonderful and kind temperment and enjoys the company of other dogs. He has been a quick study and has already learned some sign language. He will need a caring home that will not look upon him as a dog with a disability .. but a just a great dog that has some special needs.

If you have had experience with deaf dogs or are interested in opening your heart and home to this wonderful boy please submit your application.

Rufus has been adopted by a wonderful loving home and is doing very well. Mac please see our adoption section (link to adoptions)

DARLA

This is Darla ... a sweet, loving 6 yr old female with the most horrific story. Darla was abandoned by her people on the side of the road with a broken leg. Despite the intense pain and her fear and confusion of being abandoned, this girl, in true Rottweiler fashion, waited patiently for her family to return ... They never did.

Animial control did come however and once they saw her emaciated body, the broken leg and the tumour on her shoulder the size of a softball, they took her straight to the vet to be euthanized.

The vet that Darla was brought to is a friend of our organization and he fell in love with Darla and could not put her to sleep so he amputated the leg and shoulder. Sadly the hysto results on the lump came back with bad news. Darla has bone cancer. Xrays have revealed that her lungs are clear and she is adjusting quite well to life on 3 legs.

Darla needs a foster home one that will be her final home for the time she has left. She is a wonderful girl that deserves to know what a loving home is ... even if it is just for a little while. Can you open you heart and home to Darla?

If so please contact us at: adoptarott@hotmail.com or by telephone
at (905) 692-1482.

UPDATE: We are very happy to say that a wonderful family has opened their hearts and home to Darla!! She is now getting all the love she deserves in a foster home that will be her forever home.

We still can use your help -- to offset her continued medical expenses. Please support Darla by clicking on the Pay Pal button above.

For any support you can give, we are indebted -- and so is Darla. Thank you!!

We are very happy to say that a wonderful family has opened their hearts and home to Darla!! She went to the Rainbow Bridge finally understanding what it was like to be loved.

MAC

Mac, we thought was one lucky boy!!! He was saved at the last minute by a fellow rescuer in the Windsor area. Hours before he was due to be euthanized at the pound - the Calvary arrived. They assessed him and then quickly spirited him away - notifying us that Mac - "the lucky" was safe and sound.

Arrangements were made for him to go into foster care so his vet work could be done ... that's where Mac's luck ran out .. he tested positive for Heartworm. We were devastated .. as this is the first time in the rescue's history a dog from Ontario has tested positive.

Mac is not a big dog .. he only weighs 66lbs .. but he has a big heart .. even after living a life of certain neglect that has almost killed him .. he still has wiggle bum and kisses for everyone. We committed to helping Mac when we agreed to take him into the program .. we can not abandon him now.

Mac desperately needs treatment which is very expensive .. anywhere from $1000 - $1500 .. we are working with some wonderful vets that are prepared to give us a discount .. but even then it is more then we can afford.. after a run of medically challenged dogs the financial situation of the rescue is simply and sadly - dismal.

We are therefore appealing to you to help us help Mac -- give him the chance to be whole and healthy again and for once let him be Mac - "the lucky".

For any support you can give, we are indebted -- and so is Mac.

****************** Update *****09/22/03***************

Mac has come through treatment wonderfully and is doing very well. He has taken this opportunity to endear himself to everyone that meets him. His incredible gentle nature and kind soul is truly remarkable. Mac is now ready for a home to call his own .. for more information regarding adopting Mac please see our adoption section (link to adoptions)

ICE & KHAN

HOW BIG IS YOUR HEART??!!!

Look into the eyes of these 2 beautiful boys . . you can see the sorrow ..  the pain . . and  the hopelessness that comes with abuse and abandonment.. You can see the scars on their bodies . . some that have healed  ..  some that have not. What horrors these poor sweet boys must have endured is beyond our imagination . .

But what you can’t see is their hearts . . these 2 boys have huge, loving, forgiving hearts . . hearts that  haven’t been tainted by the hands that hurt them . .  the same hands that knocked out teeth and scared their bodies for life. No  ..  true to their breed   ..  and true to their hearts  - these 2 boys want nothing more than a person to love and call their own.

It’s the heart of a Rottweiler that sets them apart, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness, absolving of discretions, and fierce in it’s love . . than the heart of a Rottweiler. Unfortunately both Ice and Khan are Heartworm positive ..  their loving hearts are riddled with worms and disease . . without treatment these wonderful boys will die an agonizing death.

How big is your heart?

Please, please help these boys . . treatment is 100% effective . . they WILL be heartworm free . . but it is very expensive . . approximately $1500.00 per dog . . we can’t save them without your help.

Look into those eyes again  . .  these boys need our help . .  their hearts need to be healed – in more ways than one. . Please send a few dollars . .whatever you can spare – every dollar counts!

****************** Update *****04/22/03***************
Then and Now ...Now and Then ...  the difference love makes.

Both Ice and Kahn survived Heartworm treatment and have been adopted by wonderful loving homes where they are now part of a loving family.

ELMO

Ironically probably the best thing that ever happened to little Elmo was  to be born deaf.

The little Rottweiler/Catahoula cross pup was born “on the wrong side of town” . .  where dogs are abused, neglected and even worse . . used for fighting. Once his owners realized he was deaf they abandoned him . . dumped on the street corner at 2 months of age.

Luckily Animal Control picked him up and he has stayed there for the last month – watching with sad eyes as he is passed over - time and time again. No one wants a deaf puppy .. no one wants little Elmo. Being deaf was what saved Elmo’s life . . now it  is what threatens his life. We are trying desperately and with your help will be able to save little Elmo!! There are many resources available now to assist with hearing impaired dogs and Elmo is smart!! The shelter staff have already taught him some hand signals.

Elmo will also need a special foster/adoptive home . . perhaps someone that has experience with deaf dogs and sign language. If you can assist in this aspect please let us know.

****************** Update *****08/24/03***************

Elmo was adopted by an amazing family that is fluent in sign language. He is one of the most handsome dogs we have ever seen .. inside and out!

JOHNSON

Little baby Johnson is only 5 months old . . born into a life of neglect and abuse he was thrown in a dark shed and ignored. It was only the kindness of a neighbour who heard his pitiful cries that saved him from dying .. cold, alone and in the dark. No dog should suffer like that … let alone a baby.

A puppy needs proper nutrition and Johnson is no exception . . only he did not get it . . nor did his little body get to see sunlight. As a result he is suffering from a Vitamin D deficiency and has some developmental problems with his front legs.

He will most likely need casts or braces on both front legs to help the deprived ligaments heal although it is quite possible he may require surgery in the future.

Please help us save Johnson .. he is only 5 months old and has not yet had a chance to be a puppy. He has never known what a warm loving home feels like ..  what a proper meal tastes like or what its like to run and play in the sunlight.

With your help he will . . but we can’t help him without you!!!

****************** Update *****10/10/02***************

We are very happy to say that with proper nutrition and loving care little Johnson has made a very nice recovery and is now living in his new forever home.

Codi

I'd like you to meet Little Codi, she is a 7 month old puppy with sweet puppy breath and a velvet soft coat ..  just like all puppies have.

But sadly Codi is not like all puppies . . she can't run and play like them, she can't chase the balls she so loves, she can't even crawl up on the bed for the cuddles she so desperately needs. She has to watch with sad puppies eyes and soft heart wrenching cries while her foster brothers and sisters play, she is left out and has to play alone, lying down, because of the pain. Every step for Codi is sheer torturous pain .. a pain that she has felt for so long she thinks it is normal. Pain that would have you and I reduced to a state beyond tears.

Codi had the good sense to run away from the neglectful owners that kept her tied outside .. they never loved her
.. they did not include her in their family . . even when she trembled and begged in the thunder and lightening to be let in. When they noticed her excruciating pain . . they said nothing . . even worse - they did nothing. When Codi was picked up by Animal Control she was struggling trying to drag 7 ft of tractor chain behind her . . she was taken to the local pound and waited out her "stray time" . . watching again as people passed her by ..  not even looking into her pleading eyes . . wanting nothing to do with the crippled puppy.

But it wasn't always like this . . Codi was born a healthy, happy puppy . .  the product of a "Backyard Breeder" .. as she grew, a genetic ailment called "Ununited Aconeal Process" became apparent as it usually affects pups between 4-8 months in age - essentially her elbow is broken - it is a horribly painful condition that IS correctable with surgery. Cody can be once again pain free  ..  once again she can play like a puppy should play. The surgery is going to cost over a $1000.00 - a small price to pay really - to give a puppy back her life. Even though the rescue does not have the funds we could not say no to Little Codi . . her whole life people have turned their back on her .. we just couldn't do it to her again.

So please look deep into your heart and help us save Codi .. help us take away her pain . . let her be a puppy again . . her life is just beginning! We have a wonderful surgeon ready to operate and believes she will make a complete recovery. Please send a few dollars . .whatever you can spare - $20.00 can make the difference.

****************** Update *****03/07/03***************

Many dollars and multiple surgeries later .. our Princess Codi as she has been affectionately dubbed .. is doing wonderfully!! She has been adopted by a terrifc family and has taught us all a thing or two about resilience. This is one special girl!
